IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

A few recommendations for the ISWMP

MRF - We have a very serious immediate problem with cardboard & paper recycling and we need to address that problem in the very short-term by building a MRF of some sort right now that handles the harder to recycle items, like cardboard and paper

The ISWMP needs to discuss/address why several previous plans (1994 ISWMP, 3 Mayor's task forces) have not been implemented. See the following web site for the last task force: http://www.geocities.com/recyclingtaskforce2002maui/

Glass - We need to address how the ADF funds are distributed and lobby the HI legislature to modify the ADF law to fairly distribute the funds, and to demand that the $2,000,000 that was misappropriated in 2004 be put back into the ADF fund

ADF - We need to expand the ADF to include other items (e. household batteries, electronic equipment, paints, solvents, etc.)

Shipping costs to be included as a separate line item in any budget for recycling proposals, to address the very real problems posed by Maui’s remote location and the high shipping costs

County needs to set zero waste as a goal by a certain date

County needs to follow Act HRS 342-2, prioritizing recycling over landfilling/incineration

MRF needs to include HAZMAT recycling

At least some of the visits to other locations (i.e. San Francisco, Seattle) should include members of the County Council and Mayor
